The Sudden Significance of Digital Disruption

Businesses everywhere have realized the role digital technologies can play in increased operational agility, data availability, workforce enablement and revenue. Under normal circumstances, these tools are adopted strategically, allowing organizations to adapt and adjust their approach over time. Now a growing global health crisis is forcing millions of employees to abandon their offices to work at home indefinitely, instantaneously upending business as usual.  The implementation of digital technologies needed to facilitate and support this sudden change can now no longer be optional, or incremental. We’re suddenly seeing the term “digital disruption” in an entirely new light.

Up to this moment, the phrase “digital disruption” commonly characterized digital opportunity; the creation of new business models, customer value and revenue streams. But that was before companies worldwide, including our own, were faced with taking their entire workforce remote almost overnight, all at once introducing an enormous number of digital needs…and exponential risks.

What happens next might be anyone’s guess. It wasn’t that long ago we were discussing the benefits of things like deep authentication, aggregation, automation and adaptive risk to the creation of good digital security strategies at conferences like NICE Actimize ENGAGE, Gartner IAM and RSA.  Now, just weeks after RSA’s conclusion and in the face of a continually evolving healthcare emergency, conferences and personnel have both gone remote. What may have once been future considerations are now immediate concerns, stretching IT business operations and security to their limit amid unprecedented pressure.

Our technology and transformation capabilities are being tested like never before.  But opportunity exists to translate this period of “digital disruption” into one of digital opportunity.  While there will no doubt be challenges and obstacles ahead, this crash course in digital transformation presents an opening, a sort of compulsory testing ground, to improve digital channels, find powerful synergies, and reduce fraud vectors.

As we take this unparalleled digital journey over the coming weeks, we’ll be offering insights, recommendations and lessons learned.  While we can’t entirely control the circumstances currently unfolding, we can all work to be technologically better prepared at its end than we were at its start. In the meantime, we look forward to sharing guidance and hope you’ll join us in having these constructive conversations.
