Neon Serverless Postgres: Azure Native Integration Now Available

Microsoft and Neon have announced the general availability of Neon Serverless Postgres as a native integration within the Azure ecosystem. This release follows the preview announcement in December 2024, which first introduced Neon Serverless Postgres as an Azure Native Integration. Neon is an open-source, serverless alternative to AWS Aurora Postgres, designed to provide developers with a scalable, cost-efficient database solution integrated into Azure.

According to Nikita Shamgunov, CEO of Neon, the integration offers significant advantages for developers, especially those building AI applications. He stated:

"Neon Serverless Postgres scales automatically to match your workload and can branch instantly for an incredible developer experience."

The Azure Native integration allows for seamless provisioning and management of Independent Software Vendor (ISV) software and services within Azure, providing a consistent experience with other Azure services, including Microsoft Entra ID and billing frameworks. Developers can provision Neon Serverless Postgres directly from the Azure Portal, listed alongside Microsoft’s database offerings.

New features introduced in the General Availability release include Neon Project and Branch Creation capabilities, Direct Database Connection from Azure, Azure CLI and SDK support, and Semantic Kernel integration for RAG pipelines. These enhancements streamline team operations and CI/CD integration, extending the initial integration efforts seen during the preview.

Microsoft’s Investment in Neon

Microsoft has strategically invested $25 million in Neon, an open-source database startup, as part of a larger $104 million funding round. This investment aims to strengthen the relationship between Microsoft and Neon, further integrating Neon into Azure. Andrew Smyth, Managing Partner at M12, stated:

"Postgres is rapidly becoming the database of choice for developers… Neon is a leading Postgres platform, and this strategic investment emphasizes our commitment to deeply integrate Neon into Azure."

Neon’s platform offers features such as autoscaling, branching, and point-in-time restore capabilities. The investment is intended to enhance the development experience for applications integrating AI technologies, leveraging Neon's pgvector—a vector store built in Postgres designed for AI applications.
