UK independent schools depend on the lack of cybersecurity

In the last five years more than half of independent schools in the UK have been attacked by cybercriminals, according to Endsleigh Insurance Service report. Moreover, study finds that nearly 40% of surveyed organizations consider themselves a target for hackers. In terms of current cyber threats, the matter of primary concern for independent schools are malware and phishing scams that, in addition to reputational damage, cause file encryption and deletion, extortion and financial loss.

It is the ever-evolving nature of cyber risks which makes them so difficult to counter. However, strict adherence to basic cybersafety measures and a high degree of ‘cyber hygiene’ with good staff training will be key.

Nevertheless, only 38% of schools participated in the survey observe their cybersecurity policy at least once a month, despite the increasing frequency of cyber incidents. Considering the fact that schools are responsible for storing “special category” of students’ data including religion, medical history, as well as financial information, implementing effective cybersecurity measures is especially actual.

Effective cybersecurity measures are topical ISTE issue: summary of the district CTOs discussion

EdWeek Market Brief on June 24, 2019

One of the main events in education industry is International Society for Technology in Education conference (ISTE). This year global EdTech conference is held on 23-26 June in Philadelphia.

The crucial topic discussed by a panel of district CTOs became the relationship with vendors. Indeed, nowadays many districts are implementing strict policies for EdTech companies to protect students’ privacy and meet FERPA and GDPR requirements. Therefore, it is important for school districts to collaborate, share knowledge and make vendors be attentive to the privacy measures ahead of time.

Furthermore, Arline Pique, the director of technology for the Hamilton County Educational Service Center noticed that since zero-day virus has hit Ohio, there is still no solution to stop it, so when it comes to human factor in education cybersecurity, privacy threats are easy to happen. What if cybersecurity culture is a solution?

Despite the range of cybersecurity risks threaten the education sector, strong password is still one of the effective cybersecurity measures of the data protection. In the education sector this tool is crucial due to different types of data stored in K-12 and Higher Ed institutions (e.g. personal, financial information and intellectual property). However, some individuals and organizations still underestimate the potential impact of the weak password. Thus, a “12345” password is unacceptable unless user wants to be hacked and loss the personal data.
