New Feature for Spanning Backup for Office 365: Encryption Key Management

Self-managed encryption keys are a known best practice for securing SaaS and cloud data. As the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) states, “The use of cryptographic mechanisms is one of the strongest ways to provide security services for electronic applications and protocols and for data storage.”

Spanning Backup for Office 365 now supports this best practice by enabling customers to generate and supply their own encryption keys. With this new feature, Spanning customers have full control over their data, and will be able to audit key usage, set key rotation policies and revoke access to data at any time — making all encrypted data unreadable.

Spanning Backup for Office 365 encryption key self-management is designed to meet the following use cases:

  • Control and transparency regarding access to encrypted data. Encryption key management provides data access transparency into how keys are used, as well as greater control via best practices in limited key access.
  • Risk mitigation for unintentional or unknown exposure. With Spanning Backup for Office 365’s new encryption key management feature, organizations can revoke all cloud provider access to corporate data. Security teams can control when cloud providers like Spanning can access data, and get the ability to suspend or shut off access at any time.
  • Meeting compliance or regulatory controls. Now Spanning customers can meet client contractual compliance for those legal, financial, and consulting firms required to maintain control over client data at all times.
  • Meeting internal policies and contracted policies. If an organization has corporate or legal policies directing the control of access to cloud and SaaS data, or if contracted partners or customers have these policies, Spanning Backup for Office 365 can now support those directives.

With Spanning Backup for Office 365 encryption key self-management, customers can get full control over Spanning backup data — at no added cost.
