Identity Governance can provide huge business value if you understand it’s potential and deliver the value message in terms of business value. Here are just 3 examples.
With the low cost per user of cloud subscription-based pricing many organizations have not controlled who gets access to them. “Everybody should have a Microsoft Office365 account if they have an active directory (AD) account”…But is that true? When you look at contractors or non-IT employees with AD accounts just for accessing HR services it turns out there are lots of people that do not need that access and it soon adds up!

- Less than one-third of U.S. executives are satisfied with the onboarding process – calling it below average or poor and that it reduces the rate of staff retention.
- Lost productivity due to new hire learning curves can cost from 1% to 2.5% of total business revenues
Identity Governance contributes significantly to the success or failure of this onboarding process, such as users arriving with no access, the wrong access, and no computer or other vital equipment. HR Teams track these statistics and understand the business value of better retention rates. Identity management plays a key role in providing new hires with a great onboarding experience that keeps them in the business for longer. Organizations that think about the complete end to end process of onboarding and remove the departmental silos of HR and Identity Management realize huge business benefit they can easily measure and report on.
These benefits are not primarily delivered with automation. This is about orchestration and measurement of the success of the onboarding processes, knowing the new hire is coming and ensuring all of their IT & access processes work effectively!
Do you know the average time for a user to complete one of your identity management processes today? What is the average cost of that user per hour? If you improve that process do you understand its impact in business terms? Understanding these Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) in any other area of a business would be the normal thing to do. However, many companies do not measure the impact of Identity management on business productivity beyond automation of access provisioning processes. In summary to be successful in Identity Management we need to change the way we think about success and deliver in terms of business value. Doing this ensures senior leaders see the value and understand the business benefits of investing in identity management, and there are huge benefits!
Otherwise, senior leaders will continue to listen to the fear uncertainty and doubt (FUD) around them and will only spend just enough to meet their security concerns.
