As a former educator and the Content Strategist for RSA Conference, I cherish National Cybersecurity Awareness Month because so many organizations and industry publications take the time to help raise awareness and educate people. For example, in this week’s headlines, readers can find a cybersecurity checklist for the new norm or tips on how to beef up your remote workforce security.

Hopefully this week’s topic, “If you connect, protect it,” has resonated not only with professionals in the security industry, but also reverberated across sectors and silos—hopefully even into the homes of students attending school online and remote workers the world over. When it comes to cyber safety, we need to spread the message not only now but throughout the year.

Cybersecurity teams still have a long way to go in defending against data breaches. Just this week Infosecurity Magazine reported, “The UK’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has recorded over 1600 data breaches over the course of a year,” and The Daily Swig revealed that a ransomware attack on a Mississippi ambulance system potentially resulted in a data breach.

Oct. 8: According to TechRepublic, “A new report from the industrial cybersecurity company Claroty details how US  IT (information technology) and OT (operational technology) security professionals see their organization’s more of a target since early March, when the US pandemic shut down industry.”

Oct. 7: The Department of Justice has shut down 92 domains alleged to be used in a global disinformation campaign orchestrated by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp (IRGC).

Oct. 7: SEPTA employees are still unable to access files and shared drives as operations have not been fully restored in the aftermath of an August cyberattack.

Oct. 6: According to a report from CyberScoop, the looming violence in Armenia has been compounded by acts of cybercriminals, who have hacked Azerbaijan’s government IT networks.

Oct. 5: HelpNetSecurity reported, “NIST has launched a crowdsourcing challenge to spur new methods to ensure that important public safety data sets can be de-identified to protect individual privacy.”

Oct. 5: The rise in ransomware attacks has put the K-12 sector at a heightened risk of student data being stolen, according to news from TechTarget.

Oct. 4: “While South Korea and the United States focus on North Korea’s growing nuclear weapons and ballistic missile capabilities, the alliance must increasingly prioritize countering the development of North Korea’s cyber capabilities,” wrote The National Interest.
