These days I find myself repeatedly biting off more than I can chew with personal projects. Whether it be me thinking I can fix a fence, or dig up weeds, or maintain my own site.

TL;DR 

I’ll be moving this blog soon over to javvadmalik.com (several people have told me it would be more professional). Anyway, the J4vv4D.com domain <should> point over soon enough. But in the very likely event that I mess something up in the process, or you start getting weird notifications, or you stop getting notifications this is just a heads up – and an IOU for a coffee.

Yes, I get it. Why can’t I even manage a site? In all honesty, it comes down to time. In between the day job, trying to fulfil my ambitions of making better youtube videos, raising a family, all while trying to binge watch TV shows means time is at a premium.

For many years I’ve self-hosted WordPress (insert comments about how poor the security is on WP) and it serves its purpose, but I always felt like I was a step behind in maintaining it. Is it configured properly? Is it up to date? Have I got any vulnerable plugins installed?

Actually, I did have a different website a few years ago (unrelated to this) and I installed a plugin that resulted in the site getting owned. That was so much fun (not). So it’s also been playing on my mind for a while.

All of this kind of reminds me of my old Secops days – when our team would be running around putting out fires right next to the metaphorical gas canisters.

Right now I’m wondering whether this explanation is even necessary. I’m kind of tempted to delete this whole section and just leave it at the site changing. But, much like the old Mastermind TV show, I’ve started the answer so I may as well finish.

Weighing up options

There were three options I considered:

1. Hosted wordpress.com
2. Medium.com
3. Ghost.org

I have dabbled with medium in the past. I really like the look of the site, the fonts and how easy it is to read and make comments.

However, I wanted a place that I could call my own. Have more than just my blogs on there. Also have one place I could gather all of my digital stuff and have some freedom in design.

I was very close to going with Ghost. But ultimately, I felt that I was very familiar with WordPress, migrating the content wasn’t going to be difficult at all, and from my experience support, both official and through the community has been stellar.

So, everything will be in one place, looking kind of how I want it to, and someone else can look after maintaining a lot of the things I don’t want to.
