Making Sense of Security, Privacy and Confidentiality in Texting

Texting is the go-to method of communication today, making it important to understand security and privacy risks.

Today, pretty much everyone is texting. It’s made life so much easier – send a message on your own time and preferred device, usually without having to stop what you’re doing, and rest assured that the recipient will receive the message and be able to respond on their own time, without having to take too much time out of theirlife either. Texting has revolutionized the way we deal with all aspects of our life, from the personal to the professional. From SMS to iMessage to WhatsApp to Slack—many of us are reliant on several texting applications, whether it’s to confirm a doctor’s appointment or send a follow-up to a coworker after a meeting.

Like any new innovation, however, texting comes with drawbacks. One of the key drawbacks is that texting presents a whole new set of challenges around security, privacy and confidentiality. There are too many situations in which text messages can be intercepted by a malicious third party, screenshotted or forwarded (as in the Jeff Bezos case).

In a recent podcast on The Security Brief with Paul Viollis, Vaporstream CEO Galina Datskovsky sat down with security expert Paul Viollis to discuss texting and privacy. While privacy breaches are regularly in the news and words like “security,” “privacy” and “confidentiality” are constantly thrown around, the nuances around each term, along with the risks associated with them, are less often discussed. Dr. Datskovsky explains the ins-and-outs of texting, who can potentially access messages and the differences between security, privacy and confidentiality. She takes the listener through the advantages (and limitations) of end-to-end encryption, details why encryption can guarantee security but not privacy, and offers insights into how to protect yourself when texting.

In this era of nonstop texting and, unfortunately, privacy breaches, everyone should be aware of the steps they can take to protect information they chose to share over text. Through this podcast, The Oxymoron of Private Chatting, Vaporstream CEO Galina Datskovsky provides the listener with the basic know-how to take those steps and carefully select the communications platform that best meets their texting needs.
