Securing data in the hybrid cloud

IDG’s 2018 Cloud Computing Study tells us:

Seventy-three percent of organizations have at least one application, or a portion of their computing infrastructure already in the cloud – 17% plan to do so within the next 12 months.

But IDG also points out:

Organizations are utilizing a mix of cloud delivery models. Currently the average environment is 53% non-cloud, 23% SaaS, 16% IaaS and 9% PaaS….

We at Thales see many new on-premises installs happening for many applications as well as a massive base of on-premises applications (legacy) that are delivering ROI and that will live on. So, reality for the foreseeable future is not solely the cloud, but a hybrid cloud environment.

Unfortunately, none of these environments – on premises, cloud or hybrid cloud — is immune to cyberattacks or increasingly strict compliance and regulatory mandates. To protect their customers, their intellectual property, their reputations and their share prices, enterprises need best practice data security that is easy to use throughout this integrated environment.

VMWare Cloud on AWS

VMware Cloud on AWS is an integrated cloud offering that allows organizations to create vSphere data centers on Amazon Web Services. Highly scalable, secure and innovative, this solution allows organizations to seamlessly migrate and extend their on-premises VMware vSphere-based environments to the AWS Cloud. VMware Cloud on AWS is a great solution for enterprise IT infrastructure and operations organizations looking to migrate their on-premises vSphere-based workloads to the public cloud, consolidate and extend their data center capacities, and optimize, simplify and modernize their disaster recovery solutions.

But what about security? Enter Thales’s Vormetric Transparent Encryption.

Vormetric Transparent Encryption for VMWare Cloud on AWS

VMware Cloud on AWS can leverage Vormetric Transparent Encryption (VTE) from Thales to deliver data-at-rest encryption with centralized key management, privileged user access control and detailed data access audit logging that helps enterprises meet compliance reporting and best practice requirements for protecting data, wherever it resides. VTE protects structured databases, unstructured files, and linked cloud storage accessible from systems on-premises, across multiple cloud environments, and even within big data and container implementations. Designed to meet data security requirements with minimal disruption, effort, and cost, implementation is seamless – keeping both business and operational processes working without changes even during deployment and roll out.

The bottom line is that hybrid cloud environments are the new reality, and enterprises need to look at best practice data security in order to protect data from cyberattacks as well as achieve and maintain compliance.
