Microsoft’s August Security Update on High-Risk Vulnerabilities in Multiple Products

Overview

On August 14, NSFOCUS CERT detected that Microsoft released a security update patch for August, which fixed 90 security issues involving widely used products such as Windows, Microsoft Office, Visual Studio and Azure, including high-risk vulnerabilities such as privilege escalation and remote code execution.

Among the vulnerabilities fixed in Microsoft’s monthly update this month, 6 are critical and 81 are important. These include five 0-day exploits in the field:

WinSock Privilege Escalation Vulnerability for Windows Ancillary Function Driver (CVE-2024-38193)

Microsoft Project Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (CVE-2024-38189)

Windows Power Dependency Coordinator Privilege Escalation Vulnerability (CVE-2024-38107)

Windows Kernel Permission Escalation Vulnerability (CVE-2024-38106)

Windows Mark of the Web Security Function Bypass Vulnerability (CVE-2024-38213)

Please update patches for protection as soon as possible. For a complete list of vulnerabilities, see the appendix.

Key Vulnerabilities

We’ve screened out the vulnerabilities with great impact in this update according to product popularity and vulnerability importance. Please pay attention to them:

Windows TCP/IP Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (CVE-2024-38063):

Windows TCP/IP has a remote code execution vulnerability. Due to integer underflow or wrapback in the Windows TCP/IP protocol stack, an unauthenticated attacker may repeatedly send special IPv6 packets to the Windows host, thus executing arbitrary codes on the target system.

Official Announcement Link:

https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2024-38063

Remote Code Execution Vulnerability of Windows Network Virtualization (CVE-2024-38159/CVE-2024-38160):

Windows Network Virtualization has multiple remote code execution vulnerabilities. Due to boundary errors in Windows Network Virtualization, an attacker may enable unauthorized memory writes by manipulating the contents of a Memory Descriptor List (MDL), triggering a heap-based buffer overflow and causing client-to-host escape.

https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2024-38159

https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2024-38160

Windows Reliable Multicast Transport Driver (RMCAST) Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (CVE-2024-38140):

The vulnerability may allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on the target system. An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this vulnerability by sending specially crafted packets to the Windows Pragmatic General Multicast (PGM) open socket on the server when a program is listening on the Pragmatic General Multicast (PGM) port.

Official Announcement Link:

https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2024-38140

WinSock privilege escalation vulnerability for Windows Ancillary Function Driver (CVE-2024-38193):

Windows Ancillary Function Driver for WinSock has a privilege escalation vulnerability. Due to the use error after release in WinSock auxiliary function driver, local attackers with ordinary user permissions can exploit this vulnerability by running special programs to obtain SYSTEM permissions of the target system. At present, this vulnerability has been found to be exploited in the wild.

Official Announcement Link:

https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2024-38193

Microsoft Project Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (CVE-2024-38189):

Microsoft Project has a remote code execution vulnerability. Due to insufficient verification on the input provided by users, unauthenticated remote attackers can exploit it by sending special malicious files to victims and tricking them into running. At present, this vulnerability has been found to be exploited in the wild.

Official Announcement Link:

https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2024-38189

Windows Power Dependency Coordinator privilege escalation vulnerability (CVE-2024-38107):

The Windows Power Dependency Coordinator has a privilege escalation vulnerability. Due to an error in the Windows Power Dependency Coordinator after release, local attackers authenticated by ordinary users can exploit this vulnerability by running special programs to obtain SYSTEM permissions of the target system. At present, this vulnerability has been found to be exploited in the wild.

Official Announcement Link:

https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2024-38107

Windows Kernel Permission Escalation Vulnerability (CVE-2024-38106):

The Windows Kernel has a privilege escalation vulnerability. Due to the competition condition in the Windows Kernel, local attackers authenticated by ordinary users can exploit this vulnerability by running special programs to obtain SYSTEM permissions of the target system. At present, this vulnerability has been found to be exploited in the wild.
