DataDome CAPTCHA Analytics: Powerful Insights At Your Fingertips

CAPTCHA challenges are clunky, outdated, and becoming less effective every day. And most traditional CAPTCHAs are shown to humans as often as they are to bots—but do they need to be?

No. When humans are distinguished from bots automatically with sufficient accuracy, CAPTCHA challenges become obsolete—to human users. Therefore, to protect both the user experience (UX) and the security of DataDome customers’ websites and apps, we developed our own secure, privacy-compliant CAPTCHA that your end-users will never have to see. (Keep scrolling to understand how it stays invisible.)

Frictionless for All Users, Including Our Customers

For over a year, since the public announcement of our CAPTCHA, our customers have seen fantastic results after launching DataDome’s CAPTCHA (which blocks 80% more bots than alternative tools). If you are a customer using DataDome CAPTCHA, less than 1 in 10,000 challenges presented might be seen by a human user, because DataDome’s false positive rate (the percentage of the time a CAPTCHA is shown to a human) is less than 0.01%

The vast majority of DataDome customers have now adopted DataDome CAPTCHA (making up over 95% of the challenges shown by our solution). To celebrate, we are thrilled to announce a new dashboard capability for our users that no other bot management or standalone CAPTCHA tool can offer today: CAPTCHA analytics.

DD CAPTCHA Analytics dashboard

You can now easily understand end-user interaction flows with the CAPTCHA via Sankey graph visualizations featured on our new dashboard view, the CAPTCHA analytics page. We also provide new synthetic and detailed insights and analytic tools to drill down and examine the details of your CAPTCHA challenge performance.

The DataDome dashboard has always shown CAPTCHA statistics for how many times the challenge has been displayed, failed, and solved—but the new view shares much more! DataDome’s new CAPTCHA analytics page provides the following, available at a glance:

  • Real-time, transparent metrics.
  • False positive ratio.
  • CAPTCHA bots blocked.
  • Median time to solve the challenge.

You now have a better ability to deep-dive into your most important CAPTCHA performance metrics, drill into each branch, and expose details about user interaction flows with the CAPTCHA.

You can also see a unique view showing when we block sophisticated attacks that try to evade CAPTCHA challenges, such as hybrid human-bot attacks that use CAPTCHA farms.

How It Works

DataDome’s CAPTCHA is only triggered by suspicious requests thanks to its complete integration with our bot and online fraud detection. We hear and read countless complaints about other bot management providers that use shortcuts. They basically only watch the front door, and once a user passes the initial challenge, they essentially get free access to browse the website or app unchecked.

At DataDome, we’re constantly optimizing our detection capabilities to block online fraud immediately, no matter when in the session it begins. We use diverse signals to identify advanced bots and bad actors (based on intent), even if they don’t take over the session until after our CAPTCHA is passed.

By leveraging a variety of (client-side and server-side) signals for detection, DataDome minimizes the need for you to ever present a CAPTCHA challenge to your end users. Our CAPTCHA solution is a backup defense that is only shown to suspicious requests (based on behavioral signals).

When needed, our challenge helps capture additional detection signals to better inform our machine learning (ML) protection’s decision. When our ML models suspect that a request likely comes from a bot, the solution presents the user with a DataDome CAPTCHA. For the rare human who manages to catch a glimpse of the DataDome CAPTCHA, we built it to ensure the best possible user experience, in addition to ensuring global privacy compliance and unbeatable security.

In fact, the average time it takes to solve the DataDome CAPTCHA is around 2 seconds. That’s a fraction of the solve time for other vendors that rely exclusively on the challenge’s degree of difficulty. Some depend on a lengthy “press-and-hold” CAPTCHA which, in reality, puts a large barrier between your customers and what they want (killing your conversions).

Our Nonstop Drive for Transparency & Ease of Use

DataDome enables our users to drill down into detailed CAPTCHA metrics, statistics, and timelines. Users can filter their views by CAPTCHA response flow results, from “puzzle solved” to “puzzle failed or ignored”, to get the exact information you need. DataDome CAPTCHA is optimized for accessibility with an audio CAPTCHA in 13 languages, so we also provide you with different image and audio CAPTCHA statistics too.

Integrating a CAPTCHA with a specialized bot management solution has several additional advantages that make your life far easier:

  1. No incremental setup for displaying CAPTCHA challenges—that’s a fundamental included component of DataDome’s solution.
  2. DataDome CAPTCHA challenge results, reflecting the users’ journey, are fed back into the ML-based detection engine to better identify sophisticated bots and secure user experiences over time.
(Less CAPTCHA challenges → lower buyer friction and happier customers.)
  3. DataDome CAPTCHA does not invade user privacy or perform data mining, unlike several third-party CAPTCHA solutions.

The new DataDome CAPTCHA analytics dashboard section is now accessible by default to all users. Try it out for free today.
