While Charles Darwin did not live in an era where cybersecurity was a consideration, as our industry and our adversaries continue to evolve, one can imagine what he might’ve said about the importance of adaptability to changing environments versus continuing to try to secure our environments with technology developed by innovators decades ago.

As enterprise security undergoes a doctrinal shift, so must the way we think about what today’s networks really look like. They have become atomized. The Atomized Network is a fluid computing environment where applications, data, and even system resources are in a perpetual state of motion. Applications and data are scattered across a complex environment consisting of multi-cloud, on-premises, and legacy infrastructure, being accessed by increasingly mobile and remote workers. 

How can security leaders gain visibility into this Atomized Network? By adapting and adjusting to change by moving to solutions that give you visibility and control.

Some considerations:

• Deep packet inspection (DPI) appliances are a dead end. Middleboxes are a waste of time and money when there is no middle anymore. 
• Only cloud-native solutions deployed quickly can provide quick time-to-value. If you’re still deploying hardware, you’re reducing flexibility in an age where deployment flexibility is a paramount concern.
• Rethink your access control with Zero Trust but also rethink your technologies for network visibility and control across your Atomized Network to give you one unified view and one place to express detection policy.
• Flow and network metadata are the future of how organizations will do threat detection across their cloud and on-premises infrastructure.
• While Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) is critical, people need to stop neglecting the importance of network visibility and how the network has changed to understand what they have, what it’s doing, and what’s happening to it.
• All security innovation comes from startups – so why are you expanding with old, clunky, acquired solutions that are no longer well-managed?
