Cybersecurity Awareness Month Spotlight: Buddy Wilson, Customer Success Manager/Technical Account Manager

When thinking about cybersecurity, what comes to mind? Hacking? Malware? Suspicious emails? All those topics are valid, but there are also many other roles in the field of cybersecurity who help keep us safe from those threats.

Software development, sales, threat researching, HR, services and support, marketing, the executive suite – no matter your passion, there are many ways to apply your skills for a career in cybersecurity. For Cybersecurity Awareness Month, I’m interviewing a few people about their career paths and what keeps them passionate in the fight against cyber adversaries.

Meet Buddy Wilson, Customer Success Manager/Technical Account Manager

Shanan Winters: Why did you start working in cybersecurity?

Buddy Wilson: I started working in cybersecurity is because it was a normal transition for me. Since I was previously in the US Naval Submarine Service in a Communications Officer billet, several of my collateral duties related to computer and information security and information assurance.  In addition, my Ph.D. includes a specialization in computer and information security.

SW: What excites you about cybersecurity?

BW: I think what really excites me about cybersecurity is the fact that it is always moving forward. With new requirements and challenges, we’re constantly adapting so we can always stay ahead of the bad guys and hackers.

SW: What advice would you have for someone considering working in the field?

BW: The advice I have for someone considering a career in cybersecurity would be to try as hard as you can to get required training and certifications up front.  It can be difficult to make time later in your career since the field of cybersecurity keeps us so busy.

SW: What do you love about working at Fidelis?

BW: I like the teamwork atmosphere at Fidelis. Daily, it’s a team effort in providing the best product and service available to the customers.

SW: What is something you want everyone to know about a cybersecurity career?

BW: What I want everyone to know about a cybersecurity career is that while it can be very rewarding, it is also very demanding.  You have to constantly learn new and improved processes and procedures that allow you to continue your growth in the field and stay ahead of the changes. I also tell people that cybersecurity has developed into a very opportunistic career field with very good pay, job satisfaction, and growth potential.
