Episode 10: Creating Policies & Automating Enforcement for Data Loss Prevention
School districts this year have likely had more data created, shared, and stored from outside of school than ever before—meaning data loss prevention is at the top of the list for IT teams. With districts now operating in a one-to-one environment, every student has a device to take home and use. Now, school apps can be accessed and homework can be completed by students at any given time.
Monitoring Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 cloud applications is no longer confined to the school day. IT teams must always be monitoring because they never know when a risk may present itself and need to be addressed. This is difficult to accomplish if districts don’t have the proper K-12 cloud security measures in place.
In this next episode of The K-12 Tech Experience podcast, we are joined by Andy Lombardo, the Director of Technology at Maryville City Schools in Tennessee. During the episode, we discuss creating policies and automating enforcement to help quarantine cyber threats, and help prevent the loss of data. Andy also gives insight on the policies and cyber threats he looks at most.

JK: How about we start with you sharing more about yourself, your career, and more about Maryville City Schools for our listeners.
AL: Like a lot of people in technology, I started as a teacher and after 11 years I was done teaching middle school English. At that point, I’ve always been a technology contact in the district I worked in. I was interested, picked things up quickly, and liked to solve problems.
I transitioned into an instructional technology role. From there I got into infrastructure, networking, and cybersecurity. I went back to school and got a degree in computer science, started studying for certs, and then transitioned into my current role at Maryville City.
JK: Is Maryville City a Google Workspace district? Microsoft 365? How big is the district?
AL: Our district has roughly 5,500 students and 1,000 staff members. We have about 10,000 devices that we support. We’re a Microsoft shop, so a lot of what I talk about today will be related to Microsoft 365. But I do have some background with Google.
JK: How was the transition into remote learning for Maryville City back at the start of the pandemic and then going into the 2020 school year?
AL: Thankfully, for us, that transition was pretty seamless. Our posture at the beginning of the pandemic, we were ending year five of our one-to-one implementation. At that point we already had devices in hand and didn’t have to scramble to find more. We already had some of the things solved that others had to scramble to solve at the beginning of the pandemic. It made it a pretty seamless transition.
