Rene Leimegger has been working in the cybersecurity space for over 10 years. He held Service Management and Internal Applications & Processes leadership roles in inet-logistics GmbH for eight years. Two and a half years ago he was appointed as Chief Information Security Officer at Alpega Group.

What is the biggest challenge security leaders face today and how are you looking to tackle it?

One of the most difficult challenges is to provide a secure system that does not have a negative impact on the workflow or make it complicated and cumbersome. Information security must not be seen as a brake or a hindrance. Security features must be weighed up accordingly.

In your view, how important are security awareness programs, and what’s a CISO’s main role in making them effective?

Security starts at every single desk in the company. That is why security awareness among employees is essential. A corporate culture in which information security is seen as an important asset helps the most.

What’s the one thing you’ll never tell an employee who’s made a security error, and how would you suggest handling the situation instead?

No employee shall be exposed. An explanation of why the mistake is significant, what impact it may have, and what the alternative action would have been would be my approach.

When it comes to recruitment – what approach do you take to attract and keep the best talent, and what would be your best tip for a new hire?

Support from management and leaders gives employees security. Open company culture and the freedom to implement one’s own ideas make sense and are fun.

Finally (just for fun): if you could have dinner with any renowned figure (dead or alive), who would you choose and why?

With Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has successfully tackled so many different issues. A few tips and a motivational boost from him would be great for a CISO.
