According to Steve Symanovich of antivirus giant Norton LifeLock, the number of IoT devices is expected to reach 21 billion by 2025. This exponential growth is the result of our culture’s demand for connectivity and convenience.
The ability to control your temperature settings or view your home security camera with the click of a button, from anywhere in the world, has given consumers a sense of control—or in the case of the latter example—a sense of safety.
But as we’ve discovered throughout recent years, safety and control can be jeopardized by hackers who exploit vulnerabilities in these devices. It’s critical for manufacturers to understand the types of threats and risks that are associated with their products.
In our latest AppSec Decoded video, Tim Mackey, principal security strategist at the Synopsys Cybersecurity Research Center (CyRC), discusses the most substantial threats to today’s IoT devices and what considerations IoT manufacturers need to keep in mind as they release new products to market.
Mackey also addresses the heavily debated topic of government intervention and what role, if any, they should play in regulating IoT devices.
