Some 8 hour days feel like a week.

All of us have felt overwhelmed with work at some point. With COVID-19 still crippling the economy and most schools opting for virtual classes, right now is tougher than normal for most. It almost makes the days of long commutes to the office a happy memory. Almost… It reminds me of something the character Erin Reagan Boyle said on Blue Bloods Season 1 Episode 20: “All That Glitters”:  “Some 8 hour days feel like a week.”

The Road Less Traveled

We are all on the road less traveled right now. We’re working from home, teaching in home, socially visiting virtually from home, and dining at home. Home is where the heart is – literally.

How has working from home impacted your work process? Are you stir crazy sitting in front of your computer all day? Can you work outside? Do you even have an outside space where you could work? Do you share your video on Zoom meetings, or are you letting your voice say it all? How unkempt or ungroomed have you let yourself become?

What’s Down the Road?

For the foreseeable future we will be working and learning from home. It’s clear we will not be returning to our offices anytime soon. Further, things may never get back to the way they were before the pandemic. So, what’s down the road? What do we have to look forward to?

Glam it Up!

The virtual office is not as glamorous as some virtual Zoom backgrounds we’ve seen. Who knew Zoom backgrounds would be such a thing? Well, they are and if you’re not leveraging them, you’re missing out. It makes Zoom meetings fun, interesting and personalized.

Pockt Lint has flashy virtual backgrounds from Tiger King to Minecraft. West Elm has beautiful backgrounds of real homes featuring their modern furnishings. Take and use your own photographs for a more personal effect.

Play the Name Game

You can also check to see if people are paying attention by changing your Zoom name (numerous times) during a call. Renaming your Zoom id in the middle of a meeting can be hilarious at the right time with the right choice. If you’re on a call with data scientists, changing your name to “Deep Learning,” “Plumber” or “Kafka” can be very effective. It keeps things interesting. You’d be surprised how uplifting this can be in an otherwise dreary virtual meeting.

Above All, Be Safe

It’s hard to remain still when you want to keep moving. But being safe at home is what we all need to do right now. Yes, it’s boring. Yes, it’s socially distant. Sure it feels like we’re experiencing Groundhog Day, repeating the same day over and over again. But this is temporary. We will get through this and come out even stronger than before.

Stay safe. Work securely. Be mindful of others and enjoy the special moments.
