October 2019 – What’s New in Web Performance?

Today, Akamai announced the October 2019 Release, which introduces new capabilities to the Performance product line with a focus on helping customers deliver superior experiences with the power of the Edge. Here are some highlights from the release with additional detail below.

  • EdgeWorkers enables developers to run functions-as-a-service using JavaScript at the edge to customize web traffic. An event-driven architecture enables developers to run code at specific events along the content delivery path.

  • Introducing optimizations for animated GIFs while also gaining the ability to conditionally optimize images based on the strength of cellular network conditions. UI and reporting enhancements have been added to Image Manager along with enhanced control for developers to manipulate all artistic image transformations directly via query string parameters.

  • Real user performance monitoring and script management capabilities are enhanced with new signals in mPulse that pinpoint when performance settings were tuned in Ion helping you confirm the value of configuration changes and measure the resulting impact on customer experience.

EdgeWorkers – serverless computing at the Edge

The world’s largest distributed content delivery network is now also the world’s largest and most distributed low-latency serverless computing platform.

Key Features*

EdgeWorkers

For the first time, Akamai is introducing an all-new serverless compute capability to help you customize web traffic, expanding the possibilities of personalized engagement with your customers while putting the flexibility and control in the hands of your developers. Developers can now manipulate JavaScript at the Edge, injecting business logic at the point of customer interaction to support contextual and low-latency use cases that will help power innovation in customer experience online.

Image Manager

Image Manager adds new capabilities and enhancements that are centered on raising the customer experience bar to improve your experience with Image Manager and your customers’ experience with your brand.

Key Features*

Animated GIF optimization

Image Manager (IM) can now intelligently optimize and compress antimated GIFs to automatically create all necessary derivative versions while maximizing byte savings. IM will even convert animated GIFs to animated WebP for Chrome for the best format conversion.

Network-aware intelligence

IM is now able ot automatically optimize and deliver image and video derivatives based on dynamic network conditions for high-latency cellular and terrestrial networks. This enhancement will prevent over-downloading and is designed to ensure intelligent network-aware optimizations that produce the best user experience from wherever your customers access content.

UI and reporting enhancements

An intuitive and user-friendly UI with in-context help, a larger preview panel, and easy-to-use workflow makes it easier to build policies and utilize more artistic transformations, straight out-of-the-box. Moreover, the Image Manager Dashboard now includes video optimization data showing seconds transmitted, byte savings, video errors, content delivered, video popularity, device breakdown, and play trends, among other metrics.

IMQuery

The new IMage Manager Query-based Language (IMQuery) allows developers to apply one, all, or any comibnation of artistic image transformations from a single query string parameter. And with this policy, administrators can choose to limit which Image Manager transformations are exposed or available. In short, IMQuery allows users to convert their favorite IM Policy into query language (and vice versa!)

mPulse and Ion

Ion benefits from a tighter integration among real user performance monitoring and adaptive acceleration capabilities to further enable operational agility and continuous performance improvement.

Key Features*

Annotations in mPulse for Script Management

Introducing new annotations in mPulse real user monitoring dashboards that pinpoint when performance settings were tuned, helping you confirm the value of configuration changes in script management to help you monitor and evaluate the resulting impact on your real users’ experience.

API Gateway

With the October release Akamai’s API Gateway solution enhancements

Key Features*

JSON Web Key Set

This enhancement enables customers to publish (rotate) new RSA signing (public) keys for JSON Web Tokens in a more seamless and efficient manner.

Request Rerouting

Request rerouting allows customers to alter API traffic routing based on inbound request characteristics.

Global Traffic Management

Global Traffic Management (GTM) adds usability enhancements for developers and admins. A new command line interface (CLI) improves developer agility while UI improvements provide easier sorting, search and reporting for admin users in the Akamai Control Center.

Key Features*

UI Enhancements

GTM has added a number of requested enhancements to the user interface for easier sorting, searching and reporting, as well as an option to disable liveness testing. GTM support is also now integrated into Terraform, the widely used open source data center management tool.

CLI Interface

Akamai’s command line interface (CLI) now supports GTM, allowing customers to create and manage domains and associated objects, update datacenter configurations, update property configurations, or query the current status of properties or data centers.

Log Watermarking

GTM logs are now watermarked to be compliant with Sarbanes-Oxley controls designed to prevent billing errors or inconsistencies.

The Intelligent Edge Platform

As web traffic and application architectures evolve, Akamai continuously invests in enhancements to the distributed platform that supports our full portfolio of products and solutions for greater performance and efficiency. In this release Akamai is rolling out improvements that are designed to enable faster performance and greater offload for customers leveraging the Akamai Intelligent Edge Platform.

Key Features*

Platform Performance Enhancements

We’ve invested in infrastructure and enhancements that to increase offload for web performance customers and also make secure connection times even faster.

Faster onboarding for new properties and security configurations

We’re also excited to announce that onboarding is getting faster, and we’ve reduced end-to-end onboarding time for a new property by 97%. Certs, new properties, and new security configurations deploy more quickly and there is a new, simpler secure provisioning workflow available via API.
