Building Cyber Resilience in Australia and Beyond

Author: The Hon Christopher Pyne MP

**Dtex is excited to feature this guest blog post from Australia’s Minister for Defence, the Hon Christopher Pyne MP.

If there’s one thing we know to be certain both in Australia and across the globe, it’s that digital business is strengthening economies, opening up new markets and opportunities, and driving transformation. It’s also fostering a newfound sense of interconnectedness – between people, businesses, and systems – and requiring massive amounts of sensitive data and information to be shared online.

While essential and incredibly valuable, this interconnectedness is also making us more vulnerable to the myriad of internal and external threats that now exist. What has become clear is that strong cyber security needs to be recognized as a foundational requirement by the rapidly increasing number of connected businesses and individuals. While it’s easy to overlook or underestimate these threats, organisations that do so are making themselves prime targets for cyber criminals, outside attackers, and malicious or disenchanted insiders.

As a clear acknowledgement of the urgent and critical nature of these threats, the Australian government launched our national cyber security strategy and innovation agenda in 2016. Since then, we’ve launched the Australian Cyber Security Centre in Canberra, appointed a global ambassador for cyber affairs, and established AustCyber, an industry-led organisation focused on driving product innovation and capitalizing on the immense growth of the cyber security sector.

Cyber security is a team sport. All of us – whether governments, businesses, or individuals – need to take responsibility for managing cyber risks and understanding how our human behaviors amplify or minimise these risks. It’s especially crucial that the public and private sector continue to come together and support each other through the sharing of information, threat intelligence, and best practices.

I welcome government and private business successfully collaborating, and leveraging their respective strengths, as demonstrated by the partnership between AustCyber and Dtex. Together, they are working to ensure that Australia is a top producer of both cutting-edge security solutions as well as the specialised resources and expertise needed to use them. From fostering innovation and entrepreneurial spirit through targeted academic activities and programs, to facilitating access to experienced global security leaders through forums like tomorrow’s Insider Threat Briefing in Canberra, their joint efforts are helping to shape the modern, resilient cyber security environment to overcome the cyber challenges of today and tomorrow.
