A Day In the Life with Engineering Manager, Tyler McClure

Welcome to the “Day in the Life” blog series. Here we will feature interviews with Swimlaners to learn more about their experience. This series will give you a preview of Swimlane, our culture, and the people who keep us going.

Hello, I’m Tyler McClure. I am originally from Tampa, Florida where I also received my Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering at USF. I would like to tell you where I currently live but that actually changes to a different city or country almost every month. The ability to work remotely has provided the opportunity for location independence which I am taking full advantage of. I presume this will be a common theme throughout this post 🙂

How long have you been with Swimlane?

I joined Swimlane in September of 2019 as a Software Engineer for the Content Team.

After graduating college in 2014, I went off to be a Mechanical Engineer which was great but had one flaw by nature, it is expensive. This slows innovation at most companies and makes it difficult to do as a hobby. For software, you mainly just need a laptop, nothing prevents you from innovating the latest technologies on your couch, so I taught myself software and began the switch.

Eventually, I received an entry-level software engineering job at Acertara building an ERP system for managing ultrasound transducer repairs. This job gave me a lot of breadth across the software engineering discipline and helped me build the skills I needed to join an amazing company innovating the way security teams improve their organization’s security posture, SWIMLANE.

What does your job entail?

Currently, I am leading a team of talented software engineers who are developing and maintaining the connectors which allow Swimlane to communicate with other 3rd party products. As well as developing tools and services which enhance the content engineering surrounding these connectors.

My main responsibilities include providing mentorship to engineers and guiding them within their chosen career paths, managing the execution of planned work for our connectors, and innovating the next generation of services to level up Swimlane content at scale.

What do you enjoy most about working at Swimlane?

The company really has done an amazing job at setting a culture I deeply align with and building an awesome team that constantly improves employee experience and innovation across all business facets.

What excites you most about your work?

For many engineers, including myself, the ability to continuously innovate and build cool stuff that is also helpful to society is exciting. Swimlane is a leading pioneer for low-code automation, an emerging technology that is being used by fortune 1000 companies across the globe. It is awesome to know that something you have helped build is being used so widely and providing such an impact across so many industries.

What do you like to do when you aren’t working?

Did I mention that I like traveling? By the time you are reading this I have probably gotten an urge to do something drastically different than where I was previously. “Been in the mountains for a month, time for some surfing and warm weather”.

I have been to 22 countries in total and live for new experiences and learning about other cultures. I do adapt to my environment as far as adventure sports and hobbies go but can always be found exploring the new city I am currently calling home.

Oh, and I play pickup soccer everywhere I go.

What’s a fun fact about you many people may not know?

  1. I built a campervan which I worked out of while traveling the USA during the pandemic. I live in it whenever I am in the USA

  2. In 2018, I got a craving for adventure so decided to quit my job, bought a motorcycle, and drove it from Florida, USA to Santiago, Chile crossing 12 countries. The entirety of Central and South America over the course of a year.

Your motto or personal mantra:

Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.

What Swimlane core value resonates with you the most?

I’ll have to go with “BE A HAPPY INNOVATOR”. Nothing puts a bigger smile on my face than when I hear “Damn, how are we going to solve XYZ”. Let the fun begin!
