Time to Get Back to Work, and Lead by Doing

Leaving Forrester Research wasn’t a decision I took lightly; I love the people there and our efforts were having some impact on how the industry was collectively moving to a better state as Zero Trust expanded globally. In my role at Forrester, I was fortunate enough to have access to and conversations with a variety of stellar leaders who saw the benefits of strategic alignment for their security technology. I was blessed with great leadership that had my back and let me run with the initiatives and efforts around Zero Trust, even when I pushed the envelope a bit further than was probably comfortable for them, it was honestly a good place to be. I could see that what we were working on was helping organizations and that in my time there the conversation was trending in the right way toward a better collective position for organizational security.

But I was also conflicted. I am a practitioner, a “doer”, and I wasn’t “doing” what I was preaching. I was covering and analyzing hundreds of companies that were all pushing the boundaries of technology to help businesses achieve a better end state but there I was, removed from the action and unable to “do” much more than write about it. And it honestly bothered me. I wanted to “do” more, and that meant finding a company that had the technological capabilities that met with where the overall market was trending, wasn’t anchored to their past practices or technology, and where there was real potential to help customers operate more securely while not making it about just selling “more” security.

After looking at hundreds of potential vendors that had solutions that I thought could meet that need, and that also had a leadership team that seemed to believe in the strategic value of Zero Trust, I came across Ericom.  There are several compelling reasons that drove me to move on from Forrester and join the team here:

  • The technology they offered to employ a full Zero Trust strategy will be rolling out in 2021. While they have strong solutions, like Zero Trust web browsing using Remote Browser Isolation, in the market today, their broader platform will allow customers to leverage the globally accepted tenets of Zero Trust for any organization and any user, on any device.  If customers have the internet and are online, they will be operating in a Zero Trust infrastructure.
  • The user is the wheel in the machine that drives digital businesses, that is a reality in the post-Covid world. With all the insanity that 2020 showed us, the one thing that became universally accepted was that we will be more remote, more BYOD, and that the user is now well outside the bounds of that old “secure” perimeter. We must offer solutions that can keep every user on every device as secure as possible and eliminate the friction and reasoning that hinders security adoption across the industry. Ericom has been working toward this, and the platform extensions they will be bringing to market in 2021 will move them further toward making this a reality.
  • The technology portfolio that the company has is something that is aligned with the future of work and can help the world get back to work post-Covid.  The world is becoming more cloud, more remote, more dynamic, more BYOD and that is the future.  Based on my analysis and views of the soon-to-come product, Ericom has the capability to enable much more of that technology to be more secure and seamless for users and to help remove the load on administrators and businesses. Approaching the problem this way helps customers be more secure while enabling more fluid business operations and optimizes and streamlines the investment that businesses are and will have to make to transform digitally.

I know that the market is changing globally, the data, the facts, the trends all show us that. Security is no longer a nice to have, it is a must have. I see that Ericom has the technology to help businesses and users be more secure while removing the issues we commonly face in security adoption, which will help tip the scales in the favor of better security for businesses. By working to enable customers invest in a strategically aligned security stack that is focused on operationalizing security controls, and alleviating the problems around security use for everyone, I know there will be a positive impact on the industry that will help Ericom customers gain an edge and get back to work.
