- WordPress.org – the official WordPress plugin directory. This is one of the best places to find free plugins. You can find WordPress plugins by visiting WordPress.org plugin directory:
You can also access the same directory from your WordPress admin area. Just head over to Plugins » Add New page and search by writing the name of the plugin.
- CodeCanyon 1 – a huge directory of premium only plugins.
- Third-party developers – developers that sell plugins through their own sites. For example, you can check the Password Policies Manager plugin for WordPress.
Another approach is to search for plugin recommendations, reviews and tutorials on sites like WPBeginner.com. They have a section where you can find the best ones that they tested and reviewed.

How to Install a WordPress Plugin
Below we’ve outlined the most common ways of adding a plugin to your WordPress website.
Installing WordPress Plugins via Dashboard
Installing a plugin from within your WordPress dashboard is one of the easiest ways to get a it up and running. The first thing you need to do is go to the plugins section of your dashboard and click on “Add New”. You can then search for the plugin you want to install. In our case we are going to demonstrate how to install the WP Activity Log plugin. After you find the right plugin click “Install now”.
Then click on “Activate”.
And that’s it! Your new plugin is now installed, activated, and ready for use.
The next thing you should do is to configure the plugin settings. The settings for each plugin will vary hence we won’t be covering that in this post.
Installing WordPress plugins via Admin Plugin Upload
Paid ones aren’t listed in the WordPress plugin repository.
That’s why there is another method to install such plugins. First, you need to download the plugin from the source. Plugins are always in zip file format. Next, navigate to the WordPress admin area and click on Plugins » Add New.
Then click on the “Upload Plugin” button on top of the page.
On the next screen, upload your plugin’s ZIP file straight to WordPress. Just select the ZIP file from your PC and confirm by clicking on “Install Now.”
After the installation is done you will see a message like this one:
Now all you need to do is click on the “Activate Plugin” button and you are all set.
Note: You can also install free plugins using this method, so it’s up to you to choose which one works best for you.

Many users are concerned that too many plugins will slow down their website. However, this is just a misconception. Plugins do not slow down your website, poorly coded ones do.
