Today we’re announcing yet another milestone recognition for the company: we’re the leading Gartner Visionary in the Web Application Firewall (WAF) Magic Quadrant in our first ever placement in the MQ.
We’re the only vendor to place so highly in its first appearance on the Magic Quadrant for WAF and we’re thrilled and honored. The Genesis of a Better Approach to Protecting Web Applications
When we started Signal Sciences in 2013 we didn’t have a dream of building a slightly better web application firewall (WAF): we wanted to completely disrupt the space and challenge the industry to do better for customers. WAF technology hadn’t evolved to keep up with the rapid evolution of web apps and API architectures (e.g., cloud, agile, devops, and digital transformation). We learned how bad the existing WAF technology was first hand trying to get them running to protect the ecommerce web apps at our previous company Etsy. It didn’t take long for us to realize that the regex management and false positive frenzy that came along with these technologies could never scale and their architectures were not built to protect modern applications. A much more effective and cloud native approach was necessary.
Enter the birth of Signal Sciences!
We designed and launched a new approach to web application and API protection that is completely replacing and displacing the legacy WAF market. Our patented, flexible deployment model coupled with the power of our cloud engine for advanced web request context has essentially solved the false positive problem for our customers in a way no other technology has been able to match. This is particularly critical given how many breaches continue to happen via web apps! The Verizon DBIR industry report has shown that web apps continue to be the most breached part of company infrastructure for the last eight years running. We will change that.
