How to Hide Your Birthday on Twitter

Many people use Twitter to interact with the world. If your account is public, then anyone can see your tweets and your profile. And if you have your birth date in your profile, then anyone can see it. That increases your risk of identity theft and fraud. I’ll show you how to remove or hide your birth date on Twitter.

The Threats

As I explained in my post Don’t Share Your Birth Date Online,

Scammers, fraudsters, and identity thieves can wreak havoc with just your name, date of birth (DOB), and address.

Twitter lets you add your birth date to your profile, and make it visible to the public, your followers, or people you follow.

Maybe you put your birthday into your profile when you first created your Twitter account, and you haven’t thought about it since. I encourage you to think about it now!

How to Increase Your Security & Privacy

Twitter lets you completely remove your birth date, or control who sees your birth date. There are separate controls for the month and day and the year.

Remove Birth Date on Twitter

I highly recommend that you completely remove your birth date from your Twitter profile. Here’s how:

  1. Log into Twitter on the Web, or open the Twitter app.
  2. Go to your profile, then click or tap the Edit profile button.
  3. Next to Birth date, click Edit. (In the app, tap Birth date.)
  4. At the bottom of the window, click Remove birth date. Confirm by clicking Remove.
  5. Click Save. (In the app, tap Done and then Save.)

Control Birth Date Visibility on Twitter

If for some reason you don’t want to completely remove your birth date, then I highly recommend that you at least hide the year on your Twitter profile. Here’s how:

  1. Log into Twitter on the Web, or open the Twitter app.
  2. Go to your profile, then click or tap the Edit profile button.
  3. Next to Birth date, click Edit. (In the app, tap Birth date.)
  4. Under Who sees this? consider setting Month and day to something more restrictive than Public, such as Your followers or You follow each other.
  5. Set Year to Only you, so that no one else can see it.
  6. Click Save. (In the app, tap Done and then Save.)

Keep Your Birth Date Off Twitter

Don’t tweet your age on or around your birthday (“Well, I’m now over the hill, but I don’t feel any different!” or “Last day in my 20s!”). It doesn’t take much brainpower for someone to figure out your birth year from that, even if you haven’t entered it explicitly.

Don’t reveal your birth date in photos or videos. Imagine that you tweet photos or videos of your birthday party, and in the photos or videos are cards, or balloons, or a cake that says “30,” “40,” “50,” or whatever your age is. If you tweet these on your birthday, someone can easily figure out your birth date.

If other people reveal your age in their tweets or replies, ask the person to delete them because you’re concerned about identity theft. You can send them this post to explain your reasoning.

What You Should Do

  1. Remove your birth date from your Twitter profile. If you don’t, then at a minimum, make the year only visible to you.
  2. Don’t tweet anything that would allow someone to figure out your age or birth year, in text, photos, or videos.
  3. If other people reveal your age in their tweets or replies, ask the person to delete them.
