Information technology organizations are searching for IT management tools that are capable of delivery from the cloud as SaaS-based solutions. The benefits of SaaS-based solutions are tremendous in that they free up IT admins from having to babysit on-prem hardware if and when something goes wrong. This means that IT admins can be more efficient, save money, and deliver better capabilities to their end users. In this vein, IT admins have been searching for serverless directory services to help provide these same benefits to their organizations.
Traditional On-prem Directory Services
Aside from the above listed benefits, what are some additional reasons that IT admins are searching out serverless directory services? Well, although a wide-range of IT management tools have made the shift to the cloud, identity management has, by and large, remained on-prem. This is especially true of the core directory service, which connects users to their IT resources. Historically, this space has been dominated by Microsoft® Active Directory® and for good reason—most IT environments were filled with on-prem implementations and Windows-based tools. The days of Windows-only IT environments have come to pass, though.
New Additions to the IT Environment
Since those early Windows-dominated days of the past, the IT market has shifted to include cloud infrastructure (Azure®, AWS®, GCE, Digital Ocean and others), web applications (Slack, G Suite™, and GitHub, etc), as well as non-Windows® file servers (e.g. Samba file servers, NAS appliances, Box™, and more). The legacy Active Directory implementation doesn’t cover nearly as much of the overall IT infrastructure as it used to. Now, IT organizations are forced to patch AD with web application single sign-on (SSO) solutions, identity bridges (to manage Linux® and Mac® endpoints), multi-factor authentication (MFA) tools, privileged identity management platforms, governance/audit software, and more. That means a lot of extra work for IT admins as compared to those early days of all Windows networks. So, many are looking for a add-on free, serverless directory solution to help them free up some valuable time.
