The identity management world is quite active these days. With companies going public and acquisitions flying off the charts, IT organizations are keen to learn more about how they can leverage IAM technology to better control and secure their organizations. One area of the industry that has been particularly interesting to keep up with is web application single sign-on (SSO). For leading web application SSO providers like Okta®, this raises the question: what is better than Okta? Furthermore, IT admins are watching this space and wondering, will this category stick around, or will it be subsumed by something bigger?
Better Platforms, or Better Approaches?
Essentially, there are two ways to take on this question. One would be to focus on what other web app SSO platforms are available that could be a better fit for an organization than Okta. The short answer here is that there are many potential solutions from the major companies in the world, including Microsoft®, Google®, and Amazon®. There are also a number of smaller startups that provide the IDaaS function as Okta does.
However, the more interesting question at hand here is to focus on whether there is a better approach to connecting users to the IT resources they need. In other words, what’s available that’s better than a web application SSO platform?
Most organizations that are leveraging web app SSO solutions are using it in conjunction with an on-prem identity provider, namely Microsoft Active Directory® (MAD or AD). This combination of on-prem and cloud creates some interesting challenges for IT organizations that include high costs and cumbersome workflows. Further, because this combination doesn’t handle non-Windows® systems, cloud infrastructure hosted at AWS®, WiFi authentication, Samba file servers and NAS appliances, etc., there are still gaps in the approach for a comprehensive identity management system and process to fill.
So, What is Better than Okta®?
