The 2018 Internet2 Global Summit is being held at the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina, in San Diego, California from May 6-9. Internet2, an advanced technology community operating the nation’s largest and fastest coast-to-coast research and education network, started the Global Summit to bring together the world’s foremost leaders in research and education to collaborate, exchange ideas, and spur the future of innovation.
The event will feature a variety of keynote addresses from top research and education leaders, presentations led by industry experts, an open discussion on ways to benefit the future of the research and education environment, and sessions focusing on advanced and trusted infrastructure, identity, federation, and access management.
For those interested in attending the Internet2 2018 Global Summit, the registration fee includes all materials for the event, complimentary breakfast, refreshments, and lunch for the duration of the event, as well as an evening reception Monday, May 7.
Fortinet is proud to attend the 2018 Summit as a platinum sponsor. We’re being represented by our Chief Information Security Officer, Phil Quade, who will join the discussion on the importance of cybersecurity in education. Quade will also introduce the Fortinet Network Security Academy (FNSA)—our cybersecurity education program. The FNSA is an industry-recognized training and certification opportunity for students and faculty around the world designed to prepare them for a career in cybersecurity.
The Need for Cybersecurity in Education
Educational institutions across the country are continuously working towards ensuring safe and productive environments for their students and faculty. In this effort, it’s important that the education sector has the tools and skills necessary to provide the level of security required to address the growing volume, speed, and sophistication of today’s cyber threats.
In the first half of 2017, data breaches within the education sector doubled. Given the large number of students, faculty, and staff within any given educational institution, there’s an abundance of sensitive personal and financial data housed on that network that make it a lucrative target for cyberattacks. What’s more, higher education institutions often hold valuable proprietary research used by outside organizations that, if breached, could have devastating consequences to an institution’s reputation and bottom line.
Educational institutions also now rely more and more on cloud applications. For example, educational institutions ran an average of 47 IaaS applications in 2017, compared to an average of 28 IaaS apps in other sectors. In addition, there has been similar growth in the adoption of artificial intelligence programs and IoT devices to assist in academic and professional efforts. Together, this increasingly distributed and complex environment has introduced numerous new entryways into the network, thereby widening the attack surface and making it more difficult to secure.
The education sector is also subject to a number of significant regulations, such as the Federal Educational Records Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which dictate how personal information for students, employees, or patients is collected and stored. Institutions that manage and secure the financial data from processed card payments are also required to comply with payment card industry data security standards (PCI-DSS).
Preparing the Education Sector for the Future
From kindergarten to higher education, institutions aim to offer the best possible growth opportunity for students, faculty, and staff. Given the unique nature of its security challenges, the education sector must balance the technology and open environments that facilitate success with cybersecurity solutions and strategies capable of protecting against the most sophisticated and constantly evolving threats. Educational institutions should look for cybersecurity solutions that simplify data protection, effectively assess and react to threats, and offer consistent network performance.
