Google IdP Replacement

Google IdP Replacement

In Blog, Google Cloud, Identity Provider

Google has been making a significant push into the modern enterprise. Google isn’t content to be just a search engine provider. Now they also want to be the cloud infrastructure for an organization. With Google’s identity provider (IdP), G Suite™, and Google Cloud Platform, IT admins are wondering what IT services they can shift to Google’s cloud services. However, as IT organizations start leveraging these IT services more and more, many are starting to realize they need a Google IdP replacement.

Why are IT admins looking for a Google IdP replacement? Answering this question requires examining Google’s approach to identity management. After we do that, we’ll walk you through JumpCloud Directory-as-a-Service®, a suitable Google IdP replacement for modern IT environments.

Google as an Identity Provider

Recently, Google Cloud Identity was introduced to help IT organizations manage their Google users and connect them to third-party web applications. So why are IT admins in the market for a Google IdP replacement? Often the reason is that the organization has outgrown the scope of Google IdP and is ready for a true, enterprise-grade identity provider. Google IdP is really a user management system to Google Apps and services, along with a few select third party resources. It’s not designed to serve as the single identity provider for a large organization with complex, heterogeneous infrastructure.

While Google IdP does a great job at connecting users to Google services and web-based applications, Google doesn’t integrate with many IT resources users are still using on-prem. For example, Google IdP can’t provision user access to their Mac, Linux and Windows® systems, networks, on-prem applications, and physical file storage like NAS devices. A core, complete directory service should be able to connect users to all of their IT resources regardless of platform, location, provider, or protocol. So, despite their efforts on Google Identity Management Services, Google IdP is not meant to be a cloud, core directory service for an organization. It is a corollary identity provider, at best.

The Cloud Era Needs a Reimagined Directory Service

IT admins are disappointed to say the least, especially those that want to replace their on-prem Active Directory® platform. Why? One major reason is that organizations that leverage G Suite tend to favor cloud environments. In fact, it is expected that 72% of organizations running G Suite will run 100% of their environment from the cloud by 2025.

Part of making this shift to the cloud includes moving the identity provider to the cloud and eliminating Active Directory (and the on-prem hardware that comes with it). Clearly, G Suite Directory or Google IdP isn’t the replacement to AD. The good news is that a new cloud identity management platform has emerged to solve this problem. This reimagined directory service seamlessly integrates with G Suite and Google Cloud Platform, and it can replace Google IdP and AD.

A Google IdP Replacement

Called JumpCloud Directory-as-a-Service®, this modern IdP solution securely manages and connects users to all of the IT resources they need including the following:

  • Systems – Windows, Mac, and Linux
  • Applications – LDAP and SAML based
  • Files – cloud (Box, Dropbox), NAS appliances, and Samba-based file servers
  • Networks – Wired and WiFi

Our cloud-based directory service doesn’t just replace AD or Google IdP, but completely transforms directory services as a whole with its independent, cloud-based, endpoint-centric approach.

Organizations that still want to use G Suite identities in conjunction with JumpCloud can. In fact, JumpCloud offers a deep OAuth API integration with G Suite. This makes it easy to provision, deprovision, and manage G Suite users from the JumpCloud admin console. You can import an existing directory of G Suite users into JumpCloud with a few clicks of a mouse. Then from the JumpCloud admin console, you can also manage G Suite user access to the systems, applications, file storage, and networks they need to do their jobs – along with password resets and user updates. With JumpCloud Directory-as-a-Service, you’ll be able to move to the cloud and enjoy a secure, well managed environment.
