What is CASP Certification?

CASP Certification

In the rapidly changing world, new cybersecurity threats are emerging every day. The most simple way an organization can ensure their cybersecurity defenses are up-to-date is by getting their employees certified.  CASP certification guarantees that professionals possess the necessary IT/cybersecurity skills to build solid solutions that will be responsible for protecting enterprises globally from malicious cybersecurity threats.

Today, the CASP credential has gained tremendous popularity worldwide. The most notable organizations that use CASP include the U.S. Army, the U.S. Navy, Booz Allen Hamilton, Network solutions, and Verizon Telematics.

What is the CASP Certification?

Recognized globally as CompTIA’s highest-level cybersecurity certification, the CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner (CASP) certification is an advanced-level, vendor-neutral certification. CASP certification, created by CompTIA, provides the best information security solution training for both government agencies and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs). Moreover, the CASP certification meets the ISO17024 standards and is approved by the US Department of Defense to fulfill Directive 8570.01 M.

CASP certification validates a candidates’ cybersecurity skills and knowledge, along with assessment abilities and general problem solving used in security situations. These areas are evaluated across a wide range of security subsets. Above all, earning a CASP certification means demonstrating the ability to execute straightforward solutions in intricate environments.

The CASP Exam

CASP exam (CAS-002) was launched in January 2015. A maximum of 90-questions long, the exam is a mix of multiple-choice and performance-based questions. Furthermore, the test is administered over a 165-minute time frame at an authorized Pearson Vue Test Center.

Experience is strongly recommended for earning CASP certification. Ten years of experience in IT administration is strongly recommended for CASP candidates. With attention to at least five years of hands-on technical security experience. It is important to realize that with a higher-level certification such as CASP, unless you have the recommended experience it can be very difficult to pass the certification exam unless you have taken a CASP training course.

CASP (CAS-002) Exam (Current)

CompTIA introduced some changes in the new exam. Instead of four, there are now five domains which replaced some contents such as incident response and technical integration. The exam percentage has also changed. Description of exam objectives follows below:

  1. Enterprise Security (30%)
  2. Risk Management and Incident Response (20%)
  3. Research and Analysis (18%)
  4. Integration of Computing, Communication, and Business Disciplines (16%)
  5. Technical Integration of Enterprise Components (16%)

In April 2018, a updated version of the exam (CAS-003) will be released, check back here to learn more about the newest exam after it goes live!

CASP (CAS-001) Exam (Retired)

Launched in 2011, CAS-001 contained four domains that included:

  1. Enterprise Security (40%)
  2. Risk Management, Policy, Procedure, and Legal (24%)
  3. Research and Analysis (14%)
  4. Integration of Computing, Communication, and Business Discipline (22%)

This version remained active until May 2015, due to the release of CAS-002 in 2014. Growing demands of enterprises and the dynamic nature of information technology was the catalyst for the newest version of the exam (CAS-002). Subsequently, the changes to the exam domains reflect the new demands of the cybersecurity landscape.

Benefits of Becoming CASP Certified

Demand for becoming CASP certified is without a doubt caused by the rise in cybersecurity threats on enterprises.  Apart from its worldwide recognition, the CASP certification also has several benefits.

  • Validates knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Higher average salary in US than those without certification
    • Between $60,000 and $110,000 dependent on experience level
  • High-demand job roles

Although it is possible to achieve a high-paying, high-ranking job role without certification, earning CASP certification improves your chances in obtaining interviews faster and landing jobs easier.

CASP Certification Renewal

Following confirmation that a candidate has successfully passed the CASP exam it is important for them to focus on the next step of being CASP certified. The CASP credential (those earned after 2011) is valid for a period of three years after passing the exam. At the three-year mark, the candidate has two choices to renew their certification.  Either by taking the most current version of the CASP exam or through CompTIA’s Continuing Education (CE) program. A minimum of 75 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are required for candidates opting to renew using the CE program. In addition, there is an annual CE charge of $50 per year of certification, or $150 for all 3 years.

Earning CEU’s to maintain a valid CASP certification can be earned in several ways:

  • Earning Non-CompTIA IT industry certifications
  • Attend IT events and activities
  • Publish blog posts, white papers, relevant articles, etc.

See the full list and learn if your CEUs are valid at the CompTIA CEU information page.
