We have made amazing progress at ShiftLeft this year, and we’re poised for even more success in 2018.
When we launched ShiftLeft, we wanted to build and deliver a great security product. We had a vision of the future of security, and we couldn’t wait to share it with the world.
Of course, we couldn’t achieve that vision without financing. We were lucky to partner with two industry-leading investors: Enrique Salem, managing director of Bain Capital, FireEye board member, and former Symantec CEO; and Ursheet Parikh, Mayfield partner and StorSimple founder and former CEO. We chose these investors for their expertise and guidance, and they’ve exceeded our expectations.
We emerged from stealth mode in October of this year with $9.3 million in funding thanks to Enrique and Ursheet, who joined our board of directors.
Commenting on why he decided to invest in ShiftLeft, Enrique wrote that ShiftLeft has “baked security into the software development process in a low friction way, delivering security inside the app. I see that as a modern approach to delivering security in the application development process.”
When we exited stealth mode, we also announced the general availability of the industry’s only fully automated security-as-a-service that understands the security needs of each version of an application and creates custom security and threat detection for it.
We received a lot of media attention with our product launch and saw an amazing reception from the analyst community who liked our approach and found it ideally suited for inserting security into DevOps. We have had an avalanche of leads as a result.
Our innovative product enables companies to secure their cloud applications as part of their continuous integration pipeline, rather than reacting to threats discovered in production. We identify contextual vulnerabilities in the usage of open source software, unknown vulnerabilities in custom software, and data leakage risks, allowing customers to prioritize and fix issues. Whatever is not fixed is protected in production by our ShiftLeft Microagent, which leverages the application’s Security DNA as its policy rather than threat signatures. This continuous security improvement lifecycle that ShiftLeft enables is a first in the industry.
In addition to a strong product, we’ve put together an impressive team to take our vision to the next level. I have been fortunate to be at the forefront of several major security innovations, such as the malware sandbox and next-generation firewall, and have extensive security industry experience with FireEye, Cisco, and McAfee.
Our other co-founders — chief technology officer, Chetan Conikee, and chief architect, Vlad Ionescu — have enabled innovations that underpin electronic transactions in the financial industry and several open source initiatives.
Our chief scientist, Fabian Yamaguchi, has over 10 years’ experience in the security domain, where he has worked as a security consultant and researcher. Our vice president of product design, Etan Lightstone, has a strong background in designing for user experience. Our director of product management, Priya Chawla, was part of the founding team at Apcera and contributed to product management and marketing through a successful acquisition by Ericsson. And, our director of site reliability engineering, Matt Weagle, comes to ShiftLeft from Adobe Systems where he most recently helped architect, build, and manage teams responsible for parts of the Adobe Creative Cloud on AWS.
In our small but growing team, we already have 5 PhDs, which demonstrates the challenging nature of the problem we are solving. Given that these individuals could work for virtually any company of their choice, the fact that we are able to attract such talent shows their true passion for our unique approach to security.
We look forward to hiring more great people, so get in touch to learn about our job openings.
Customer success is the most fulfilling part of growing a business. It’s where we see all the parts working together.
The market’s response to our offering has been incredible, but we couldn’t have done it without our customer advisory board that comprises several industry leading customers, as well as our advisory board that includes industry leaders Florian Leibert, Mesosphere CEO, Mitch Wainer, Digital Ocean co-founder and head of brand marketing, and Gabe Monroy, lead program manager for containers at Microsoft Azure.
As we gaze into our crystal ball, we see continued growth and success in 2018 and beyond. Insertion of Security into DevOps and protection of cloud workloads are the seminal security challenges facing the IT industry. ShiftLeft is well-placed to lead in this growing market. We hope you join us for the ride.
