Cloud Security Doesn’t Have to be Complicated

Protecting servers, data and web applications isn’t easy. There is no silver bullet solution that can magically protect you from all cyber attacks. That said, effective security—whether you’re protecting local assets in a data center, assets in the cloud, or a combination of the two—essentially comes down to executing simple best practices consistently. Security isn’t easy, but it’s also not complicated.

Cloud Shared Responsibility Model

The first thing you need to do is understand what you’re responsible for protecting. When it comes to assets and resources in the cloud, the responsibility is split between you and your cloud service provider.

Whether you are using Google Cloud Platform, AWS, or Azure (or some combination of them), security is a shared responsibility. Google, Amazon or Microsoft—as the case may be—are responsible for the security of the cloud, meaning they provide the physical security, instance isolation, and other foundational security capabilities. Meanwhile, you are responsible for what you put into your cloud environment, meaning you must secure your applications and data.

Effective Cloud Security

Most of security can be distilled to doing a handful of things, doing them well, and doing them consistently. You have an important decision to make when it comes to determining the best way to provide the necessary security for the workloads you are running on Google Cloud, AWS, or Azure—the safety of your data depends on it. Will you build your own team, buy your own tools, and monitor and manage your own security, or will you partner with a third-party to provide those services?

There are lots of things you can technically do yourself, yet you choose to hire experts to do it instead—changing the oil in your car, putting shingles on a roof, or cutting your hair. Maybe you don’t want to invest in the tools and equipment necessary to do the job. Maybe you don’t want to spend the time it would take to learn to do the job reasonably well. Maybe you simply feel your time can be put to more valuable use focusing elsewhere.

It makes sense that you would apply the same logic to something as important as protecting your servers, applications, and data on Google Cloud Platform, AWS, and Azure.
