August 2017: Top Hacks and Breaches [INFOGRAPHIC]

New research shows that at the end of 2016, predictions were being made that the amount of cyberattacks are set to double in 2017 – as we are inching towards the end of 2017, those predictions were made true. And then some. August proved to be a busy month, with cyberattacks hitting every sector and some big names across industries. Let’s take a closer look at the month of August in hacks and breaches.

 

 

August 2nd: In a cyberattack said to be a larger-scale Sony Hack, hackers managed to infiltrate HBO’s servers and released episodes of Ballers and Room 104 and a Game of Thrones episode script online. The hackers threatened to release more information in the weeks to come, claiming that “HBO is falling”. theft of 1.5 terabytes of data from HBO, and we’ve seen full episodes of Ballers, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Room 104 and more leaked online, along with Game of Thrones scripts, a breach of HBO’s social media accounts and the exposure of Game of Thrones cast and crew’s personal information.

 

 

August 10th: Ukraine’s national postal service has been hit by a two-day-long cyber-attack targeting its online system that tracks parcels. Unknown hackers carried out a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack against Ukrposhta’s website. The attack began on Monday morning, but ended shortly after 21:00 local time (1900 BST). However, Ukrposhta reported on Facebook that the DDoS attack continued again on Tuesday.

 

 

August 14th: Blizzard Entertainment reported that they are dealing with a DDoS attack hitting the network providers that affect the connection to games. Some of the company’s biggest games are believed to have been hit.

 

 

August 18th: The personal data of more than 1.8 million Chicago resident-voters was found exposed. The data was sitting in a cloud storage site, available to the public for downloading. The data itself contained voter IDs, names, addresses, phone numbers, the last four digits of Social Security numbers, and more.

 

 

August 22nd: The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) has fallen victim to yet another massive cyber-attack. This attack exposed confidential records of up to 1.2 million patients. The hacker claimed to exploit a weakness in the appointment booking system used by the NHS.

 

 

August 30th: Instagram has been hit by a potentially serious data breach, said to affect many “high-profile” users. An unknown hacker claims to have stolen data from 6 million accounts, and has placed them up for sale for $10 each. The breached data includes phone numbers, email addresses, and more. The hacker leveraged a flaw in Instagram’s API to gain the sensitive information, and Instagram has since confirmed that the bug has been patched.
